Annotated Bibliography

Below are three sources I plan to use to back my argument/paper topic from Thursday's blog. You might be interested in checking them out as well.

Belson, Ken. "Soccer’s Growth in the U.S. Seems Steady." New York Times 23 Jul 2010: n. pag. Web. 20 Feb 2011. < http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/24/sports/soccer/24soccer.html >.

This article claims that the past World Cup showed great interest in soccer from the U.S. Even after the country lost, citizens bought tickets to games more than any other country. Some of Europe’s best soccer teams have begun to appear playing MLS teams as well such as Manchester United this past summer. Numerous European players have switched to playing for teams in the states due to age, but show that they still have much to contribute. There are a growing number of MLS teams and stadiums being built as well. It provides good examples of how the US interest is on the rise. These will be good to incorporate in my paper to support my beliefs that the interest has gone up, I will just have to incorporate how they relate to the internet.

"Sports in USA Soccer." U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Germany. U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Germany, Jul 2009. Web. 20 Feb 2011. < http://usa.usembassy.de/sports-soccer.htm >.

This reading states that while soccer/futbol is slower in gaining popularity as other sports in the United States, there are more official soccer players than any other nation. It also gives a brief history on the sport and the beginning of our country’s participation internationally. Then it goes into the growth of women’s and youth soccer. Finally it talks about professional soccer in the U.S including the World Cup and MLS. This website was good for a brief background on the sport for those that might not know. I will use some of the information to provide my readers with some required knowledge.

"FIFA World Cup Soccer Popularity." Espr. MaxiNews.co.uk, 20 Nov 2010. Web. 20 Feb 2011. < http://maxinews.co.uk/sport/fifa-world-cup-soccer-popularity-2/ >.

This blog discusses how soccer is the most globally popular sport, despite not being as popular in the U.S. as other countries. It also gives interesting facts about when and how the first rules were installed in England. More importantly, it mentions how coverage of soccer in the United States has increased both on television and the internet allowing a chance for people to become more interested. It gives some examples such as Fox Soccer Channel and ESPN who have made more of an effort to increase the overall interest in the nation. This source is not the best with credibility since it is a blog but is still resourceful. I will use the the television networks fox sports and espn in my paper to show how technology (internet included) to give examples to readers.

  1. Great job summarizing and explaining the purpose and use of these sources. Although i know absolutely nothing about soccer, or any sports for that matter, you seem to know enough about it for both of us, and the impact it has on the world's media as a whole is somewhat baffling.

  2. I agree with Morgan. I think you did a great job at summarizing the sites. You also include how you are going to incorporate these links in your paper and to your topic as a whole. I think the only thing that's missing is the evaluation of the sites. Do they have any limitations? Why are they important to you and possibly others?

  3. You've got good sources--in that they show how soccer is gaining popularity in the US. What I personally think you should argue is that SITES like ESPN where they broadcast games online, and facebook status updates allow people in the US to "always know" what is going on.

It might be a huge stretch to make a claim that says "Soccer is in America to stay!" However, I think what you can show is how the youth is much more knowledgeable on the topic than ever before. The live feeds, the statuses on facebook show that, even if they don't have watch parties like for football games, people are listening, and caring.

Also, you may want to explore what USA players are playing abroad for the Premiership. I know Clint Dempsey, Tim Howard, Oguchi Onyewu, Jozy Altidore all play. Perhaps show how the USA is now involved with THEIR game, instead of how their game is coming to us... Just something to think about.
